Driver Training

If appropriate, a driver training program is recommended. The training is provided by a licensed driving instructor under the supervision of the occupational therapist. Although the training will include some aspects of what you might learn in a driving school, the primary purpose of the training is to resolve a medical concern in regard to driving. Our instructors have ongoing education, experience and expertise when working with drivers who have medical needs in regard to driving.

When learning to drive with adaptive equipment, it typically takes about 10 training sessions to ensure a driver is competent and consistent.

For the driver with changes in cognition or who experience anxiety, the plan for training can vary depending on the goals for the program. There may also be in-clinic sessions with the Occupational Therapist. At the conclusion of training, a reassessment is often required.
