Hospice for the homeless coming to Toronto
Most Canadians want to die at home – but where do you go to die when you have no place to call home?
At any given time, there are more than 5,000 people experiencing homelessness in the City of Toronto. Sadly, every year many die in isolation with few supports around them.
Three organizations – Saint Elizabeth, Inner City Health Associates and Hospice Toronto – are partnering to create Journey Home Hospice, a new 10-bed hospice for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. As a centre of excellence for homeless end of life care, services will be tailored to meet the unique and complex needs of this population.
The partners were today joined by Minister Hoskins, who announced provincial funding to support the first four beds, which will be opening soon at a Homes First facility on Shuter Street. The partners are actively seeking a suitable location for six additional beds, which will be added over the next two years.
