Health Care Assistant Diploma Program
Based on the BC Provincial Health Care Assistant Curriculum, all graduates of the Saint Elizabeth Health Care Assistant Diploma Program will be eligible for registration in the BC Care Aide Registry. The theoretical component of the program, the clinical experience in a variety of care settings and the relationship development amongst the students and between students and instructors are all grounded in the following values/principles:
- All individuals are complex and multidimensional in nature, possessing physical, cognitive, psychological, social and spiritual domains.
- The enhancement of self worth, self reliance and personal autonomy.
- Compassion and respect for others, increases with self awareness.
- Aging is a normal development process and individual capacity to grow, learn and evolve remains throughout life.
- Disability does not define the worth of an individual.
Graduates of the HCA Diploma Program will be qualified to work in the following community care settings:
- Facility based multi-level and/or complex care
- Residential Care (eg: group homes/supportive housing for adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities, or mental health challenges)
- Assisted Living
- Dementia Care
- Home Support
Upon completion of the program, students will:
- provide person-centred care and assistance that promotes independence, and respects the uniqueness of each individual resident or client.
- demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and use an informed problem-solving approach to provide care and assistance that promotes the physical, psychological, social, cognitive and spiritual well-being of clients/residents and their families:
- possess the ability to work independently, in a professional and accountable manner, with minimal direct supervision from other professionals.
