What is home care?
Home care is a vital component of our health system today and will have an increasingly central role to play in the future. Nowadays almost any type of care offered in an institutional setting, short of surgery, can be provided in the home environment. As our population ages, more and more people will require care and support to maintain their health and independence and many will opt to receive these services in the comfort of their own home, under the direction of a multidisciplinary team. Home care can be a safe and effective option for people of all ages and diagnoses, including individuals who have just been discharged from hospital as well as those with more complex or chronic conditions.
How do I access home care services and supports?

What factors should I consider when choosing a home care provider?
Selecting a home care provider is an important decision, and like most things in life, doing some basic research beforehand will help ensure the choice you make is the right one for you. The following are some questions to ask when considering your options:
Flexible and responsive services
- Do they offer the services you need?
- Are they able to deliver care when and where you need it?
- Can they accommodate your special language requirements?
- Are they sensitive to your cultural values and beliefs?
- Will they include you and your family in the development of your care plan?
- Can you request a change to your care plan, visit schedule or care provider at any time?
High quality standards
- Are they accredited by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation?
- Are their staff certified annually by their respective professional colleges?
- Do they conduct thorough background and reference checks before hiring?
- Do they invest in the continuing education of their staff?
- Do they utilize the latest tools and techniques, including best practices?
Community experience and involvement
- How long have they been in business?
- How well do they know the community supports in your area?
These factors will help you determine the quality of services you can expect to receive from a provider, as well as their philosophy regarding your care.
