Home care CEO recognized among Canada’s Most Powerful Women
Markham, ON, November 22, 2007 – Saint Elizabeth Health Care president and CEO, Shirlee Sharkey, has been named among Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN).
The annual awards are presented by WXN, Canada's leading association of women executives, in partnership with Scotiabank Group and Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario. The awards celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of Canadian women in eight categories, including: Corporate Executives, Entrepreneurs, Public Sector Leaders, Trailblazers & Trendsetters, Professionals, Champions, Future Leaders and Arts & Communications.
Sharkey, who is being recognized in the Professionals category, is a registered nurse and health care executive with a passion for bringing innovation to health care across Canada. Under her direction, Saint Elizabeth Health Care has evolved from a small Toronto-based service provider to an internationally-renowned leader in home and community care. Recognized as one of the 50 Best Employers in Canada, SEHC employs approximately 4,000 staff and delivers 3.3 million visits annually.
For Sharkey, the Top 100 award builds on the incredible energy that comes from impacting people and communities with the care and services the not-for-profit charitable organization provides.
“As health care leaders, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to create the type of work environment that allows people at every level to be very passionate about what they do,” says Sharkey. “It’s like Dancing with the Stars, in terms of allowing aspiring leaders to rise up and shine.”
Sharkey, who actively mentors young people both within and outside of SEHC, is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto and a former chair of George Brown College. She is also involved with many not-for-profit boards.
